Boosting Your Child's Health: Essential Supplements for Growing Kids

Natural Supplements

From dashing through the drive-thru to grab dinner to popping a multi-syllabic-ingredient meal into the microwave, it’s no surprise that many kids (and adults) don’t get the vital nutrients they need.

While a healthy, balanced diet ideally provides all the necessary nutrients for children, various factors can lead to deficiencies. Environmental toxins, illness, poor health habits, and special diets, such as veganism, can all impact nutrient intake.

Just like adults, children may benefit from vitamin and mineral supplements to bridge these nutritional gaps. However, it’s essential to consider their unique physiological needs and ensure supplements are high-quality and appropriately formulated. Here are Nikki’s
recommendations:

Key Supplements for Kids

Multivitamins

A good multivitamin can help cover a range of nutrients. Look for ones derived from whole foods or, if unavailable, a standard formulation free from fillers, toxins, and added sugar. Avoid multivitamins with synthetic folic acid, opting for natural folate instead. Always check labels to ensure quality and safety.

Multi-Minerals

These supplements provide essential trace minerals like zinc and magnesium. A well-rounded multi-mineral can support various bodily functions and development processes.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s, particularly DHA and EPA, are crucial for brain development and overall health. Fish oil supplements should be independently tested for heavy metals and PCBs. Cheap fish oils can be rancid and harmful, so invest in high-quality options. While plant-based sources like flax and chia seeds contain omega-3s, the body converts these less efficiently, making animal sources more reliable.

Probiotics

A good probiotic supplement contains about 10 billion multi-strand organisms. Probiotics support digestive health and bolster the immune system.

Vitamin D

Current guidelines suggest 600 IU for children, but some experts believe higher doses are necessary due to widespread deficiencies. Adequate sun exposure and high-quality supplements can help maintain healthy vitamin D levels.

A note on micronutrient levels

Testing serum levels of nutrients through blood draws doesn’t provide an accurate assessment. This method, commonly used for nutrients like vitamin D, fails to show what nutrients actually enter the cells. If nutrients are high in the serum but not reaching the cells, they aren’t being utilized, leaving the body still deficient.

Nikki offers a test that measures intracellular micronutrient levels, providing a clearer picture of the body’s true nutrient status, deficiencies, and potential underlying conditions.
